Ellen DeGeneres accepted the Teen Choice Award for the Choice Comedian on August 18, 2015. As the winner of the Choice Comedian, DeGeneres gave an inspiring speech encouraging her teen fans to be unique and to stop trying to fit in and just be themselves.
Ellen said:
“I’m honored to be in that category and what a coincidence…I was on the way to the beach (the award is a surfboard). I am pro teen choice. They say that teens make bad decisions but you made a very good decision by choosing me. There was a time in my life that I was not chosen, I was the opposite of chosen because I was different. What makes you different right now makes you stand out later on. You should be proud of being different. The most important thing i want to say is embrace who you are.”

Ellen DeGeneres paved the way when she came out as a lesbian before it was socially acceptable to come out. Hearing her encourage teens to be unique and to let them know that being different is a good thing is something the teens definitely need to know. It isn’t being a teen – especially a teen that may not fit in. So if you are a teen who is struggling with being different, as Ellen DeGeneres said, “be proud of being different.”
